Privacy Policy

Last updated: 7 November 2026

This policy explains what StrangerTalk collects, why, how long we keep it, and what rights you have. It is written to meet applicable data protection laws, including the EU and UK GDPR where they apply to you.

1. Who we are

StrangerTalk is run anonymously. There is no named owner or staff contact on this site. For any privacy or safety concern, use the Report button in the chat.

2. What we collect and why

  • Country, taken from the country code your network provider sends with the connection. Purpose: country-level statistics and our safety rules. We do not record your IP address in our own code.
  • Gender choice (Female, Male, LGBTQ, or Prefer not to say). Purpose: to choose your colour theme on this device, and, if you use the "Chat with" options, to match you with people who fit your selection. We treat this as sensitive information. We only use it with your consent, given when you enter the site.
  • Chat preferences (Male, Female, LGBTQ toggles). Purpose: matching only. An LGBTQ preference can reveal sexual orientation or gender identity, so it is sensitive information and is used only with your consent.
  • Anonymous statistics: number of chats, chat length, number of messages per chat, and connection events. These are not linked to a person.
  • Reports: if you press Report, the last up to 20 lines of that chat that are shown on your screen are sent to us for review. Nothing else from the chat is kept.

3. What we do not collect

We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, payment details, or account. We do not store the content of chats. The only exception is the reported lines described above, which are kept for review and deleted after 30 days. We do not record video or audio.

4. Where your choices are kept

  • On your device: your acceptance of the entry screen, your theme choice, and your chat preference toggles are kept in your browser's local storage. You can clear them at any time in your browser settings.
  • In memory on our servers: your gender choice and chat preferences are held only while your connection is open, to make matches. They are not written to our database.

5. How long we keep data

  • Connection state and gender and preference settings: until the connection closes.
  • Rate-limit counters (to stop abuse): kept in memory and reset within a minute.
  • Anonymous statistics: kept without personal identifiers.
  • Reported chat lines: kept for review and deleted automatically after 30 days, whatever the outcome.

6. Who we share data with

\n

The site is hosted and protected by Cloudflare, which processes connection data, such as IP addresses and country, to deliver the site and to defend it against abuse. Our own records do not store IP addresses. Repeat reports against a connection are counted using a salted hash of the IP address, which expires after a set period.

We do not sell personal data. We use trusted third-party infrastructure providers to run the site, and they process data only on our behalf. Reported chat lines are seen only by the people who review reports. We will disclose information where the law requires it, including to law enforcement in the relevant jurisdiction. We show Google AdSense advertisements on some pages, such as the guides and FAQ. Ads are never shown inside the chat. Google and its partners use cookies, including advertising cookies, to show ads based on your visits to this and other websites. You can see or change ad personalisation at adssettings.google.com. Where the law requires it, we ask for your consent before these cookies are set. To learn how Google uses data from sites and apps that use its services, see how Google uses advertising cookies. Ads are not shown inside the chat.

7. Your rights

You can ask us what personal data we hold about you, correct it, withdraw your consent, or ask us to delete it, subject to limits in the law. You can withdraw consent to the gender and preference settings at any time by clearing your browser storage and not using the matching toggles. We will respond to requests within 30 days.

8. Security

Connections use HTTPS and WebSockets over TLS. Access to reported chat lines is limited to the people reviewing reports. We cannot guarantee absolute security, and you should not share personal information in any chat.

9. Children

StrangerTalk is for adults aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child is using the site, report it through the Report button.

10. Changes

We may update this policy. The date at the top shows the latest version. Material changes will be shown on the entry screen.
