How anonymous chat works, and what it means for you
Anonymous chat sounds mysterious, but the idea is simple. You are not asked to create an account or share your name, and the person you talk to does not see who you are. Understanding how the system works helps you make better choices about what to share and how to stay safe.
How matching works
When you press Start, you join a queue of people who are online at the same time. The system pairs you with the person who has been waiting the longest, unless you have chosen specific options, in which case it looks for a match that fits your choices. If nobody matches your selection for a few seconds, the system widens the search so you are not left waiting indefinitely.
Matching happens in real time. There is no profile to browse and no list of people to choose from. This is what makes random chat quick, and it is also why you should never assume that someone is who they say they are.
What the site does and does not keep
Messages are relayed between the two people in a chat and are not stored after the conversation ends. The exception is a chat that someone reports. In that case, the lines shown on the reporter's screen are kept for review and deleted automatically after 30 days.
We keep anonymous statistics, such as how many chats happen and how long they last, without linking them to a person. We do not ask for a name, an email address, or a photo, and we do not keep your IP address in our own records.
Why anonymity cuts both ways
Anonymity lets people speak openly, without worrying about a public profile or their reputation. That freedom is one of the reasons people enjoy random chat. The same feature also means that a small number of people may behave badly, because they feel there are no consequences.
Because you cannot verify who you are talking to, treat everything a stranger tells you about themselves as unconfirmed. Enjoy the conversation, but keep your real-life details to yourself.
Choosing who you talk to
The Male, Female, and LGBTQ options let you express who you would like to meet. Your choices are used only to find a match, and they are not shown to other people. If you leave the options off, you may be matched with anyone. You can change your choice at any time, and the change takes effect the next time you look for a match.
Choosing an option does not verify anyone. It only shapes who you are paired with, so you should still follow the same safety habits no matter who you choose to talk to.
Using anonymous chat responsibly
Keep chats light and respectful, protect your personal details, and leave any conversation that feels wrong. Remember that the site is for entertainment. It is not a dating service, a counselling service, or a place to get professional advice. If you are going through a hard time, talk to someone you trust or a professional support service.
If you see behaviour that breaks the rules, press Report. Reports are how the community stays safe, and repeat reports can lead to a temporary block for the account behind them.
